Course Descriptions for "Communicating with Compassion" and for "How To Give Advice" How To Give Advice

Communicating with Compassion

Have you ever looked back at how you listened and responded, and wished you had handled things better? Have you ever wished you had better, more effective and empathic listening skills?

The Communicating with Compassion tele-course offers a highly useful set of tools for effective, skillful and empathic communication at work, with friends and at home. These skills are always useful, and are especially valuable in tricky situations, such as when others are expressing emotions (e.g. anger, concern, disappointment, hurt, worry, frustration, sadness, etc).

Whatever communication skills you have, the Communicating with Compassion phone conference course will take those skills to the next level.

You will learn (continue here):

  • 5 listening skills and when to use each one

  • 2 key communication mistakes to avoid

  • 5 keys to offering effective advice and feedback

  • Affirming the dignity of the other and avoid shame-based responses

  • How to lend people an ear so that they work out their situations

Intrigued? The first 2 teleconference sessions (out of 10) are offered with no obligation. These two sessions focus on the single most important skill of listening and responding with empathy and compassion. Call in from the comfort of your home or office!

Highly interactive sessions, 50% presentation and 50% demonstration and practice, and a user-friendly handout. Practical skills, immediately applicable in both work and personal life. Apply them to your lives and watch the magic happen!

Attend the first two sessions as my gift and see if it is right for you.

How to Give Advice and Get Back Gratitude Not Attitude

Have you ever given advice and gotten back "shut up" or "who asked you?" Or made a suggestion and gotten back resentment instead of gratitude?

Have you ever given advice and seen relationships damaged or even fail because of what and how you gave your input?

Good advice can be a valuable gift that we offer people. Yet, sometimes in spite of our best intentions, our feedback is not appreciated, and is sometimes even resented. The ability to offer input in a positive and constructive way is an art.

I have experienced all this up close. I have given people advice, intending to be helpful, and seen how it resulted in failed conversations and ruptured relationships. I have also been on the other end. I have received advice I didn't want and fel t resentful about it. I have seen my relationships with people suffer because of the way they gave advice.

In this phone-conference course, based on my upcoming book, you will learn:

  • 5 skills for giving good advice effectively

  • 2 key mistakes to avoid

  • Underlying approach of dignity, respect and consideration for the other person

This course covers the last third of the material of Communicating with Compassion. How is this course different?

How to Give Advice:

  • Explores the skills of giving advice in more depth

  • Spends less time on the skills of listening, especially how to listen when emotions are present. (Listening skillfully when emotions are present is covered in depth in the Communicating with Compassion tele-course--see above).

  • Is appropriate for all situations, and not only emotions are present

  • Is a seminar and not a mastery class: there will be time for questions but it does not include practice and coaching

As a result of this course you will give less advice, and the advice you do give will be better received, whether or not people actually do as you suggest.

Attend the complementary session and see if it is right for you.
